Cowl grill fasteners?
« on: April 12, 2012 - 02:50:12 AM »
Something that has been on the back burner.

What type of fastener does the air grills on the cowl, just in front of the windshield use?

Are they buttons of some kind?

Who sells them?

they are phillips head screws with a boss (?)  underneath the head, that keeps you from cracking the plastic.   no pic, sorry

I'm not sure when they stopped using the screrws.  Maybe 70 and 71 used the screws and 72-74 just snapped in. I know my 73 doesn't use any screws.

Mine has holes for fasteners but snaps in also.  They seem to ride ok with just being snapped in but I did not want to risk loosing them if that was not enough.

Are we talking about the black plastic grills that are for fresh air into the car itself up at the windshield?  If so I have a 72 and they snap in but have holes for screws as well mine did not have any screws I assumed they were missing.

I was curious what the fastener guide said....

1970...philips head screw
1971...hex head screw

Some 1970's built after March 15th, have been found with hex head screws.  Most T/A's and AAR's have been found with philips screws.

That would mean 72-74 just snapped in.

My 71 'Cuda is a late build car and shares a few things with 72 models.   4 bow headliner and the like.

Is it possible that I have screw holes but never had screws installed?

Sure it's possible.  If the screens are original, you should be able to see if there is a screw imprint in them.
