What is the proper way to ground your fuel sending unit
« on: April 29, 2012 - 04:09:55 PM »
I am having problems with my fuel gauge working properly(yes I know all too well about the issues Chrysler had with the fuel gauges).  My question is, what parts are required for grounding purposes?  The strap type ground (the flat one with gripper jaws on each end that bridges from the sending unit to the hard main fuel line)seemed to be a weak link, so I  instead used a short piece of heavy gauge stranded wire and used clamps to hold the wire against the fuel lines.  But I am still having intermittent  functioning of the gauge.
When the tank is full, the gauge only reads about 1/2.  Could this be remedied by pulling the needle loose and putting it back on with needle pointing at full(when the  tank is full)?    My sending unit is fairly new and in good shape I think.   Any thoughts

What do you mean by intermittent?

If your gauge is reading half full when it's full, I think your sending unit is junk like most after-market units.

I had a similar fuel guage reading issue.  A full tank would read half and sometimes empty.  It was not the ground or the sending unit.  It was my float.  It had a small fracture which let fuel enter into it.  The float basically became an anchor and was sinking to the bottom of the tank giving an empty reading when indeed it was full.  Check your float!

:iagree: 3x  Eventually my float filled enough where the readings were no longer intermittent, just empty. I did the clamp/wire thing also, to no avail,  after that is when I found the float had gas in it. .

If  I remember right, I took that "jaw" clamp and ended up soldering a wire to it. Then took that wire to a known good ground.

If I had to guess I would say your problem is somewhere in the sending unit or the float. Don`t mess with the needle on the gauge! Try searching the archives lots of good suggestions there to get them working properly. I got my original working again with some of those tips. The thin wire soldered to the float swing arm was a good tip to improve grounding problems.

Page 2 and page 4 show the "swing arm wire".

Thanks for your replies and your links to other threads.  Going to try the wire/solder method!
Hope it works!
