    surface rust treatment help

    Hi all,

    I am pulling some of my suspension parts out of storage and they have some small areas with surface rust break through, they were blasted and then painted with seymour stainless steel pigment spray cans at the time.

    Is there a local product, Ace/napa I can buy to treat the rust after I scotch bright the surface?  I don’t want to disassemble the units and start over with sandblasting.  Maybe denatured alcohol with a shot of rust inhibitive primer is fine?

    not sure what pieces you have,  but por-15 on the rust is great stuff. just blasting and rattle can paint, it will all rust back in time. i would por-15 the rust, sand and spray epoxy primer and then paint it.

    I would recommend Rust Bullet.
    I've heard people complain about POR-15 adhesion issues before.

    I remember reading about evapo-rust and metal-etch I think both from local retail stores?... I should have satin clear coated the parts.  Thx

    evapo rust does strip rust off parts.  If you soak it, brush/rinse it off, let it sit for an hour or two and then soak it again, the part will get a dull finish on it and will rust very slowly.  I typically either RPM the part if it's staying bare, or paint it when it's in that state,

    POR sells some prep spray that has to be used in order to get good adhesion. If you don't use it, the stuff comes off in sheets.

    Rust Bullet, you can actually sand smooth pretty easy.
    Reduce with Acetone or reducer and spray it on.

    I sprayed the inside of my quarter panel with it before I put it on. Gave it a scuff with 80 grit, then epoxy primered. I bet it lasts 100 years if the car stays in CA.

    For small parts like some of the suspension parts; you can buy a Preval sprayer. hardware stores carry them quite often.

     Reduce it a little and then spray the parts needed hanging on coat hooks. Let dry for 3 hours then prep for overcoat tint.
