Windshield Reinstallation
« on: May 09, 2012 - 12:48:26 PM »
I'm at the point of preparing to install the windshield and am confused about which butyl/ 3m sealant tape I would need to use.
Was it 5/16"? Or something smaller?
Also, isn't there a liquid rubber application that goes on as well- to help seal the chrome trim?

Good timing on this question.   Nowadays, when glass shops install windshields on older cars, they typically only use a black silicone type sealant.    The clips that hold the windshield moulding are made exactly for that:  Hold the moulding in place

Although the black sealant does get on the moulding, it is not meant to hold the moulding in place

Thanks Jack.
Isn't that a bit on the thick side?

My manual says 5/16 and I used 3M windo-weld primer which goes on the painted surface 1st then the butyl tape. Here is a picture of the 3M primer.

Only 1/16 of an inch difference and my molding seems to sit down low enough.

Also got my windshield put in over the weekend using the 3m window weld,,  now my question is,  Are the trim clips smaller for the front glass than the rear glass?  Used the same ones and the trim is off of the glass maybe an eigth inch or so.   So if i need smaller clips where can i find them,  Looed around locally and the local napa store carries a selection but all are the same height from the rivit/stud to the edge where the trim wraps over it.  :(

The clips on the front are slightly different than the front. I would venture to say they are a bit smaller.
