shims for conv. header bow
« on: May 20, 2012 - 05:59:30 PM »
Does anyone know if there are shims under the chrome piece where the convertible top lands on. Its the piece that is not on the top but the chrome piece it comes in contact to to form a watertight seal.
Seams like I need something to straighten the chrome to form to the top weatherstripping

My 70 challenger has a rubber piece there but it still leaked in the rain until I really tighten down the latches.   You can adjust the front so that it is very tight.  I bought all my top pieces from Year one back in 1994 when I went through that part of my car.  Don't know if they still sell the rubber gaskets but I'd think most convertible/uphostery shops would have what you need.

I've had mine off before and don't recall seeing any shims. The top's front rubber on mine is shot so it does leak when driving in a heavy rain. I did notice that if  the anti-rattlers are out there is a better seal. I've got SoffSeal's E-body convertible top kit, just haven't opened it or installed any of the pieces yet. It's "CH3400" and does come with the that seal at the chrome piece you're talking about. I'd get a new seal first then take wiging19's advice and tighten the latches if it still leaks. Also, if the mounting screws are too tight it can dimple the chrome and maybe cause a leak.

I second his comment on the anti-rattlers concerning the better sealing and I believe the Soffseal's E-body convertible kit is what I put on my car.

I just had my top done and it has the rubber piece on it. The chrome part it lands on is not perfectly flat (straight), it looks like it needs shims under it, where the screws go, to level it out.

Are you asking if there is shims or a seal in-between the metal header and the stainless steel trim?
Mine had some rubber stuff that was in between the 2 that kinda resembled the stuff that holds windsheilds in

The chrome piece on the header bow when you tighten the screws down form the chrome to it leaving gaps. I'm just looking to straighten the chrome piece so the rubber on the top seals the gap across the top
