Anyone have any experience with 440 Source internals?
« on: May 30, 2012 - 11:57:54 AM »
Looking at finally redoing my 440. 440 Source seems to have the best prices for higher end internals: Crank, rods and pistons.

Obviously they make them sound great in the descriptions, but I'm hoping that someone here has actually used them and can give some feedback.

How close were they to true drop in fit, balancing, etc?

Basically, would you recommend these for a Six-Pack motor that will be built up to 500-600hp. I'm not going too crazy.  :)

we have built 14 or more Strokers using 440 Source parts , , the crank will drop in without clearancing unlike the Eagle crank that took 4 hours of cutting the counter weights down , they use excellent brgs & rings , the rest is good quality but I would have a machinist check things before assy , we did have to chamfer some of the main brgs as the radius can be wide .
All of the strokers will built that we dynoed made well over 600 Gross hp some over 700

I bought ( and am in the middle of assembly) of a 451" kit from Muscle Motors. The price was good. Just don't let them "clearance" your wrist pins in the rods and tell them NOT to grind on your rods to balance them.I had to send back the set of rods they gave me.
Other than that I'm quite happy with the machine work/clearances on the crank!

I built a 451 stroker with their stuff... pretty mild street build and made ~500hp.

I agree with Chryco's response.  Their stuff is good quality, but the tolerancing is worth having someone double-check.  If you plan on using their heads (not mentioned in your post) think about ordering them bare and adding your own hardware.

To stroke or not to stroke that is the question!

The one time I used them I was happy with the quality.  Should hold up to 700 to 800 easy is what my machine shop said.  Good quality stuff.

I kept everything stock except for the stroker kit.  Went from 383 to 438 and it dyno's at 402 hp.  The machine shop said with heads, bigger carb and headers it should make 500 to 600 easy.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

I forgot to mention that when I ordered my kit back in 2007 or 2008, the word on the street was to have it balanced by a shop (don't have 440 source balance it).  Apparently their tolerances were a bit looser than most shops would let by... I'm not sure if that's the case now.
