Fuel System Will Not Prime After Filter Replacement.
« on: June 02, 2012 - 03:18:15 PM »
:faint: Ok so I just replaced every ounce of my cooling system. I had the challenger up on front blocks for a couple weeks. I got the system back together and decided to change the fuel filter. Which I have done 100 times before. I replaced the filter and got it all back together and went to crank it and I get nothing (Dry). I have never had a fuel issue before. The car has about 1/3 tank of (Getting old fuel) fuel. I cranked and cranked and the fuel never made it's way to the filter. I thinking that the angle was bad I dropped the car back down to the ground and continued to crank and got nothing. The question I guess and this is on a 318 with a stock pump is do you think my pump went bad or do these systems have issues with priming? I didn't want to put more fuel in and then have to drain the tank to work on the pump. So what do you all think may be my problem.  :1zhelp:

Dribble a little fuel into the carb and see if it fires. This will make the fuel pump move faster
and may help prime the system. Just be careful and don't put too much gas in the carb. You don't
want it to backfire and give you more problems.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

You reminded me of something that happened  30+ years ago that I haven't thought of in ages... An old man was on the side of the road with his '65 Ford so I stopped to see if I could help. He was out of gas and ask if I could take him home for his gas can and bring him back. When he got his can he also brought a tennis ball with a hole in it with a short length of hose through the hole. After putting gas in the tank he put the ball in the filler tube & blew on the hose to prime the system. Car started almost immediately.

That is brilliant.

Gosh I hope that is not the problem.
Well I went out and did my best to prim the system. I used my compressor to push about 30-40 lbs of pressure into the tank. Got some fuel into the clear filter and then thinking I was hot **** went around to try and crank it. Turns out the wife while helping me yesterday had left the key on.  :clueless: So the battery was dead. No worries I hooked it up to the charger and went off to get some chores down. 3 hours I returned and didn't get more then a very forlorn couple cranks out of it. CRAP!!! The battery is done. So now I will be getting a new battery before I can tell you if it worked or not.   :bricks1:

you may need to run a vacuum volume & pressure test on the pump .
