Oh I thought he went through the top with the front jacked up.  :roflsmiley:  I have seen pics of the k-frame install and agree it is a very fast way to go. So is going through the top I had my HP manifolds , starter, power steering attached going through the top and it only took about 20 mins to get her in, bolted to the motor mounts and tranny mount. But it took three of us to keep it off the firewall and radiator support.

It took me 4 hrs to drop everything out the bottom from the point where the car was driving by myself with no help approx the same going the other way but I still think it is fatser when you consider that everything is already on the engine , carb , starter , headers , pullies belts , fan wiring etc . Plus the risk of scratches / damage is less .
From the top once the engine is in you still have a lot of parts to bolt up

Yes I am finding this out, through the bottom you can hook up the fan, mount the carb, and run the fuel line to the pump, I still have to mount my fan, and carb and run a fuel line.

found my pics...

I had a handy hook in the front bumper...

who needs a fancy dolly?

More fancy dolly for assembly

Had to go REALLY low to get the K-frame reattached.

I'd probably do it this way if I was at my house.  But considering that the only place I can do this right now is my parents, I'm going to try putting the rear in the air technique now.

That would have been impressive to see. I would not even know where to begin with the front jacked up! :roflsmiley:

Well, keeping in mind that this was over 13 years ago and I was only seven short years into my Mopar muscle car repair training and it seemed to be the way to do it at the time.

Plus without the help of the interwebs I was all on my own.        :working:

Well...I forgot I started this post and just saw it.  All of you techs gave great answers, but I'll tell you what happens when the install is being done by a coward.

I put the engine and trans together and lifted it with a Harbor Freight 2 ton crane and a Harbor Freight 3/4 ton load leveler.  The car was on the twin-post lift, so I couldn't lift just the back (at least the lift mfr said never to do it).  So I get the engine/trans up over the engine bay and I start cranking that load leveler.  The trans goes down and it's pretty close to the firewall.  The front of the new 340/416 stroker is over the radiator support.  The hole setup is at a 45 degree angle.  I've got sons on both sides of the car to make sure nothing gets scratched or dented.  Then it hit me...WHAT IN THE HELL AM I DOING?!

I've got about 1000 lbs hanging over my car, supported by less than $250 worth of equipment made by slave labor at gunpoint in China.  I started having a panic attack imagining what I would do if the whole thing dropped, and what it would cost.  I was having visions of the story getting back to the factory, and the inmates raffing and smoking as they took turns retelling the story to cheer each other up.  I couldn't take the stress so I pulled the engine trans back up and out.

BTW, the engine and bellhousing fit in there just fine, and I put the trans in from the bottom.  I am so ashamed...

nothing to be ashamed about. those same thoughts run thoughts my head every time i pull an engine.
if this engine drops, I'm F*cked!  :pullinghair:  :banghead:

but i go and do it anyway. I just make sure if anything catastrophic ever DOES happen, i'm not in harms way.

I just finished doing my first up from the bottom install and it went amazingly well. I had the headers, starter, fan, belts trans and everything hooked up to the 440 and it slid in like it was meant to be there. It took me a couple of hours to get everything else connected but the car fired up this morning with no problems other than a 180 degree out and a few gremlins that had moved in since the 318 came out. All my installs are going to be going in/out from the bottom from now on.
