ignition wired wrong
« on: June 16, 2012 - 08:42:51 PM »
71 Cuda, just put my new engine in along with a new engine wiring harness, when i try to start the motor it acts like its only firing on every other revolution and then when it does starts it's when i'm letting the key go off the crank position. i do have aftermarket chrysler electronic ignition installed, could it have something to do with the Ballast Resistor.

If you have the dual ballast resistor the start side could be bad or you could not be getting power to it in the start position from the ignition switch

its a single ballast resistor, i checked power to the coil and with the ignition in the on position it has power to th plus side of the coil and when cranking it has power to the negative side, my question is probably dumb but when its cranking should my test light be on steady or will it go on and off while cranking, (thats what its doing)

you should have blue wire 12v feed to the + side & the Black / yellow wire back to the ECU , the test light should blink , the coil is fed power & grounds through the ECU , when the ECU breaks the ground the coil field collapses creating a spark

replaced the ballast resistor and it seems to have taken care of the problem.
