1970-1974 Challenger Cuda Auto Console
« on: April 22, 2013 - 06:42:27 AM »
FYI for me. Is there someone that anyone knows that refinishes consoles? Also when I googled the console it seemed to come up with 1970 to 1974 consoles, so I take it they are all similar. The automatic console is what is in question.

1970 is a one year only deal.  Some early 71's could have gotten a left over 70 part.  The 71-74's had an ash tray at the back.  70 had a seat belt holder.  I'm sure there are people who have fixed cracks and refinished them.  The problem is trying to mirror the original grain pattern.  Tony's Parts makes new consoles if you want to go that route.  They aren't perfect but they look nicer then an old cracked piece.  Your top plate may need some minor grinding to fit.

Ask Dave at Roseville if he sells Tony's consoles.  I'll bet he does.

If your console is just dingy looking, you can clean it and spray it with SEM paints.  I used their adhesion promotor and Landau black for my interior plastics.

Thanks to ALL for the responses. At this moment I am on a holding pattern due to one car sold and the other is still in negotiations and looking on the NO side..

Hello I have a question for you experts.  My boss has a 1970 challenger and wants to know if the automatic console is the same as the standard console.

They are not the same.  The hole for the shifter in a manual is much larger than the auto.

Okay lets try again.  He knows the opening is different, that is not the question, we are rephrasing it.  The console he has now if sat on a table is flat, is the automatic one longer on the side toward the drivers seat to go to the floor or is it flat all the way across????

They are the same other then the opening. The shifter boot is visible under the console. It doesn't look good but that's the way it was.

Thanks to all who have read and replied.  I just talked to the boss and here is the problem.  The automatic console is flat, when he bolts it down there is still linkage and open spots on the sides, it looks like there might be another part that goes under just the console.  Do any of you know if that is the case?  He called them plastic curtains, I have no idea what you would call them but the console doesnt fit down over the whole hole.  Is there something that does under that console that makes it longer on one side?  I hope I am explainging right.  The picture is what his looks like, see how there is nothing on the sides to cover the whole hole?

No, nothing else. I had to space my console up off the mounting brackets to get everything fitting nicely. You still can't see the linkage. Post a pick of what it looks like now.
