Installing Mufflers in the stock location.

I would like to install mufflers in the stock location,beside the fuel tank.I have  long tube headers, X-pipe and exhaust tips for my 340..Pipes will be 2.5".Will not be running resonators.Hope to use Flowmaster 40,s with needed outlet location.

 Is there a disadvantage to installing the mufflers so far back:as in performance or sound?

I have my mufflers installed in the back where the resonators should be.  I'd say the difference in performance would be inconsequential but I could be wrong.  As far as sound, it sounds sick!!!  :burnout:

You'll want to run a muffler that's the same shape as the stock muffler.  The flowmaster 40 looks like a resonator...not an E-body muffler.  It won't look right back there.  Magnaflow and some other brands make a round muffler that will work back there.

The sound will be different if the muffler is in the back vs infront of the axle.  It should be a little quieter and you won't get as much of a raspy sound at the back.  The only disadvantage to the muffler being at the back is that it won't get as hot and could collect more water.  If you run a stainless muffler, you don't have to worry about that.  I would recommend drilling a small weep hole in the back of the muffler.(down low)  That will let some of the condenced water drain out and lengthen the life of the muffler.
