1973 challenger big block conversion questions?
« on: July 31, 2012 - 09:40:12 PM »
hello! i am new to the site and live in indiana and i have a 73 challenger. i am putting in a 400 big block and over the fall and winter i am stroking another 400 to a 451. i was wandering if i have to change the k member to make it fit or will the engine work with the one in the car? it was a 340 but it was long gone when i got the car. the engine and trans is fresh. the trans is a 727 and we pulled them as one last week from a 73 charger. i seen the tread on big block swaps but didnt see anything about the k member. i was told from someone else that it had to be changed? any help would be great! thanks

Welcome, I am new here to so maybe this will be my first chance to help someone out. You will not need to change out your k-frame. You will be fine as long as it is a V8 K-frame. Iswapped a 440 in place of the old 318 and it bolted right up.

P.S. oh yeah, better post some pics of your car before you get the business.

Im not as seasoned as some of the othe members but welcome friend, you just have to change the motor mounts thats it really. once you do that it will drop right in. If you had a small block 727 you dont even have to change your drive shaft if you use a big block 727. Enjoy friend!

There are a few other things to change , you will need a larger rad unless you have the 26" wide heavy cooling pkg or A/C even then the bottom connection will be on the wrong side unless you use the 73 up water pump housing on the big block .& would recommend bigger T bars . Wiring harness will need to be extended or swapped .  Power steering & alt brackets needs to be for the big block & do not interchange with small block
