73 model year saw a lot of federal regs kick in....5 MPH bumpers, increased emmissions controls, etc... I always heard 73 was the first year for mandatory disc brakes....does anyone have a 73-74 E-body or B-body with drum brakes? Could these cars built after 72 be cars built for Canada or export? If so, they would not be mandatory disc brakes. This has turned into quite an intresting post. I also figured the small bolt pattern went away during this time to save $$ by standardizing, just like the "standard" single type of marker lite that was adopted in 72.
Thats what is so cool about Mopars...i've been playing with these cars for almost 30 years..and I learn something new almost every week about them.

I had a '75 dart sport with drums and 5 on 4 bolt pattern... I parted it out and cut it into little bite size
pieces...

Now a days that car would have been worth some money :'(

To Identify the rear axle just measure the space between the spring seats center to center.

43 inches for A-body
44 inches for B-body 1962 to 1970.............I bet yours is one of these ;)
46 inches for E-body
47.3 inchs for B-body 1971 to 1974

ok, was just in the garage, and I can't really measure from spring seat to spring seat, cuz of the spring relocation that was done after the tubbing, but from the back of the brake drum to the back of the other brake drum, I measured a total of 55"

Does this mean anythin to anybody??

YOU WIN!!

As per the website that Chryco was kind enuff to provide, the measurment is consistent with the '62 - '70 B-Body rearend.  Very good, 360!!!

Thank you everybody for your help.  With the mystery solved, I can shop for rims with confidence.  You're a great bunch!

Great...

You should get wheels with about 5 inches of backspacing. If your going with the low look you might
want wheels with the front spacing of about 4 inches

In case you were wondering the white car in the pic has 10 inch wheels  5/5 but if it were lowered the
pass side tire would rub alittle  without trimming the lip a bit :-\

well, I ordered a set of American racing 797's black steel wheelies.  15X8, with 4 3/4" back-spacing.  Since the car is green and black, I thought they would really set off the contrast.
