Extremely VOLATILE fuel. Dangerous, especially if vapor ignites inside of the breather. Be Careful, you're
much better off with kerosene.

Thanks for the cautionary note.  I discovered the wonders of white gas around the campfire some years ago... 

Anyhow, I've gone back to carb cleaner and hot water as it seems anything with pressure to flush it is helpful but i'm losing steam at this rate...  after about 18 hours in gas, nearly 4 cans of carb cleaner, and several 10s of minutes of flushing with hot water its still putting out very small grains of gunk when I shake it.  I don't think I would really be comfortable using this before its fully clean, but I'm starting to wonder if it will ever get there. 

Brad, when you flushed it, did you go from the bottom or top?

I flushed it out from both ends. I found that after I soaked it in the acetone it dried out the crap inside and it blew out as dust with compressed air.( lots came out this way) After I used hot water and then sprayed a liberal (...ewww I hate that word?  ) amount of brake cleaner to dry out the water and blew it out again.  I kept repeating this process till it was clean.  I'd say you will need access to compressed air or it will be pretty tough to clean it all out?

OK thanks for the good suggestions.  Is there any particular type paint I should look for to finish it off once its all cleaned?  Doesn't have be 'correct' original look, I'm thinking good old black will do fine.
