Rhodes V-Max Lifters, Opinions and Experiences
« on: August 07, 2012 - 07:44:14 PM »
So I have used these with great results on 3 small block mopars. Getting ready to use a set on my 440 in conjunction with a XE 275 HL camshaft and 1.6 rockers. Willing to bet I can get at least 18 inches of vacuum. Anyone else ever use them?

did you have to do any modifications to use these? if so, how extensive was it? if not, what were the results?

I have only used original hydraulic flat tappet lifters but I love Rhoads brand.

The ticking sound make for a nice conversation point at car shows.

They do require adjustable rocker arms,  stock length pushrods are fine. I have them in my 87 W-150, its lifted 4 inches 33 x 12 Dick Cepek's. Out on the highway i average 24 mpg, with a mildly cammed 318. I can roast the tires on a whim, its a super torquey motor for it size. I have mine set to .025 for normal use. The ticking noise is barely audible.

might just as well run a solid cam if you going to have a ticking sound

I had crane hyd variable duration lifters in a bb Buick I built. The spring pressures must have overcome the hyd as they didn't work, sounded really bad when running.... sort of like a cement mixer!  :grinyes: They all went in the garbage can. :'(  $$$$
I've never tried Rhoads before but wonder if the suffer from the same issue?

Well hot rod has done testing with them on BB chevy and a
LS series motors with some pretty wild camshafts. I used them on my old 340 with 1.6 rockers on a Mopar 292 .509 lift without any issue. I beat the hell out of that motor revved it to 7G on the regular. I'll also add that I was using a hi- vol/ pressure oil pump, although rhodes says it makes no real difference, and I never had an issue.

the weight of the oil matters, not the pressure

thicker oil bleeds slower

that is another thing, the motor will idle more differently between hot and cold. As the oil heats up it thins out and the lifters bleed more easily.

Well I generally run a 10w40 or 15w40 weight oil in my motors.
