speedometer cable routing in 4-spd '70 cuda
« on: November 19, 2012 - 10:23:53 AM »
I seem to be having speedo and tach issues. Speedo first: sometimes works, but needle is always jumping. I have replaced the cable with a new Mopar piece. My question is: what is the proper routing for the cable in the interior? I have some tight bends to avoid the clutch pedal and spring. Any photos anyone?
the tach: I have installed the Mopar performace electronic ignition distributor kit, when I turn the key on, the tach goes to 1000 rpm before the motor is even runnning, then it becomes intermitent in its accuraccy when the car is running. Can the tach be tested, repaired?

thanks for any help/advice,

Bradley,

  Welcome aboard here.

I can't help you much with your first question as I have an automatic. Does the speedo act the same with the new cable too? It could be that thinks are just gunked up with the gears inside, but that is just a guess.

The original tachs on these cars are usually long dead by now, so it's surprising to see someone with one working. Your symptoms are not the usual I hear though. I never heard of a tach getting a reading before the engine fired up. Is the wiring original, or has someone messed with it?

It could well be that both need rebuilt. You might check out this guy if you want to send your's out. Click on restoration services.

As I ecall the cable runs beside the pedal above or near the spring in the straightest line possible from the guage to the firewall , I know it rubs on the side of the pedal .
RTE has electronic circuit boards that are simple to install in the tack but you need to buy the tester to adjust the settings correctly

There is a special plastic clip that retains the cable to the brake pedal assembly. It plugs into a hole right before the cable enters the speedometer. This helps keep it aiming perfect concentric to the input hole.

If you had your OEM clip; you would transfer it to the new cable. Perhaps you could use a fast tie to simulate the plastic part. I've never seen/known of the original  reproduced.

I was lucky to have kept my OEM cable. That's how I know this.

Down below, on the frame is another clip that retains the clip on the D/S edge.
Very unique clip on the car.

Here's the picture of the cable plastic retainer that clips into the upper bracket I mentioned.
Below that, is the special clip that mounts the cable underneath on the frame.

Hey Mike

You know your bolts holding the pedals on should both be going the same direction?

Thanks for the pics Topcat

I put a brand new speedometer cable on my 4 speed 1971 R//T Challenger and it is also bouncing around under 40 mph. :banghead:

I didn't have a clue as to how the cable was supposed to be routed and I ended up with some pretty tight bends in my cable but after seeing the pics it appears the cable goes inbetween the clutch and brake pedals?.

As far as the tach, my factory one works good, but is about 850 rpm high.

Santa is getting me one of those brand new repop tachometers to try.
