If you look in the "Transmission and drivetrain" section you'll find quite a few threads on the 'slapstick" shifter. Below are a few posts, the 2nd one has some pictures. Look further and you'll find more. Hope that helps.

It sounds like you may have a broken spring.

Here is mine it looks like it is missing the bottom side of the gate plate and spring. Also the pic of the repop shifter shows only 3 mounting holes and looks like one mount may be higher then the other one. My shifter both mounting tabs are level together. I am not sure that this is the correct shifter at this point. Are there any other mopars with the round shaft that this may be now?
Thanks

It looks like you may have a '66-'70 A/B body automatic console shifter.

Ooops, I thought it might be A body, but it's not. But you are definitely missing the spring.

Looking at the pic of the repop it looks like I am missing the bottom of the gate plate which when you put the shifter in first and bump it, it only goes to second. I see where the spring goes on the body but there is no spot to attach it to the spring on bottom.

OK, If you see in the pics I posted (and in the one of the new one from PG Classic) there is a tab that the spring attaches to. IF the tab were to break off the entire plate can drop out of the shifter mechanism. Have you taken your console plate off and looked to see if this plate is laying in the bottom of your console? If you mail me $20.00 bucks, I will mail the shifter mechanism pictured to you (8-10 bucks for priority mail and the rest for the part provided you are in the USA) I think that's a fair price. There are two rivets that hold the mechanism together that you will have to grind off to disassemble the mechanism and replace the rivets with some small bolts. Once disassembled, you can remove the plate you need and put it in your shifter, or you can buy a whole new one. Mine is a little rusty, but very usable once cleaned up. The spring you can get from www.rtspecialties.com or just find a small spring from Home Depot or Lowes. Hope this helps! PM me if you want the shifter & I'll give you my mailing address & you gan give me yours!

Just to clarify something I said previously (for anyone else following this thread), the ratchet mechanism plate with the tab that the spring attaches to will not fall completely out of the shifter mechanism if the tab is broke off, but it will drop down out of sight. The shifter will shift, but the shifter click/lock part will be inoperable.  8)
