Rear Seat Removal
« on: September 12, 2012 - 01:52:26 PM »
This is kind of embarrassing, but I can't get the back seat in the 73 Barracuda to unhook from the floorpan!  I've done this more times than I can count with other cars but for some reason I can't seem to push the seat bottom far enough rearward to allow it to unhook.  I've use all my weight, strength, screwdrivers, pieces of wood, you name it and nothing has worked.  If any of you have had this problem how did you end up getting the seat out?  I've been trying to replace the rear wiring harness for a couple of weeks, but the seat has me stumped.

Thanks in advance, Jim

Well, the steps I go through would be 1/ tug the seat bottom towards the front of the car. 2/ push the front edge down hard. 3/ push to the rear and lift.
If that doesn't work, something is under the seat preventing you from pushing it down? Or the tang on the seat frame is bent?

I seem to remember the push down, slide forward method working for me.

You definitely don't pull up.   :grinno:

Same idea as a 67-69 Camaro for holding the bottom rear seat in place.

I just slide it in , and push down, ?  Lift up to see if it catches? For me the hardest part is keeping the darn seat belts from sliding back under the seat.  ;D

You sometimes have to grunt and get the right facial expression to get the rear seat out!

you should try and feel around were it hooks to see if something has lodged in behind the hook area and not letting it push back far enough to release

Thanks for the feedback, but I pulled the car out in the driveway so I could open the doors wide and finally got it out!  The passenger side unhooked when I could get at it better, but the drivers side still did not want to come out no matter how hard I pushed or pulled.  Its definitely a push down & back, then up & forward process because of the shape of the hook holding it in.  This isn't nearly as hard in the Roadrunner, must be the smaller seat bottom making it have less room to move.  How I finally got it unhooked was I took my BFH (Big F'n Hammer) and my largest blade screwdriver and whacked at the front of the wire loop until I could get it back far enough to push it the rest of the way.  I'm not sure if the rear seat which is recovered is thicker than original making it bind sooner when pushed back or if the wire loop that catches in the floorpan hook was bent too far forward, but there was no way it was going to unhook without some serious hammering.  If its even half this much fun going back in I'm not going to even try it until I'm all done doing everything I need to do with it out!
