A833 wont shift into second gear

Ive got an A833 4 speed from Brewers Performance in my 440 Cuda. Its been installed for about a year and a half and is only a hobby car so it only has a hand full of miles on it...500 max.  Has been working flawlessly since the minute it was installed but out of nowhere now it wont go into second gear, it just grinds when you try to shift into second gear when driving the car.  With the car off and the clutch in when you go to reverse, first, third and fourth you can hear and feel thru the shifter the gears engage.....but when you shift in to second you cant hear and feel the gears engage...it feels like it kinda goes limp.  Ive looked at the shift linkage and everything there is ok.  You cant shift into second (it just grinds) whether you are shifting from first to second or downshifting from third to second....you can just hear and feel it grinding.

Any ideas on my problem?

What happens when you try while not moving (engine running)?


The goal never changes - Stop the 60' timer with your back tires

With engine running, not moving and clutch pushed in, when trying to put in second gear it wont go into gear....feels dead.  If you start yanking on the shifter and start letting the clutch out it starts grinding.

I don't think any amount of shifter/clutch adjusting will fix this, time to  pull the trans.

sounds like a problem with the syncro hub / keys

this video is probably something they showed to the kids in mechanic school back in the seventies! it's old, but so is your A-833...
the first part is all about how it works, the second part focusses on how you set it to shift properly! dunno if it answers your question, just came across it the other day and i'm sure gonna see it again after i picked up my A-833! it kinda explains things on a level i can understand   :bananasmi

I lucked out!!  I previously had checked the shifter linkages to find all of that ok......yesterday I took the shifter trim ring and boot off to inspsect the shifter.  To my surprise the jamnut on the shifter travel adjustment had backed off allowing the bolt to move which was interfering with the shifter being able to fully engage the second gear position.  Cant believe it.....thats not my usual kinda luck but I'll definately take it!!

Hah!  That wouldn't be my luck either.

Glad you got it figured out (and it didn't take much either).
