Exhaust Question

I'm on the home stretch with this car and I've got a couple of decisions to make regarding the exhaust.
I've gone with headers and will be installing a set of Flowmaster mufflers but I don't know whether I should install the resonators in back as well.

Will resonators hurt or help the sound? I want have some stock looks, as installing the resonators and head shields would do just that.

Thoughts?

I had both the mufflers and resonaters installed and the car sounded awful quiet.
I will eliminate one or the other

I have Doug's headers and flowmaster mufflers. No resonators. I think it sounds great.

I  have headers ,, 2 1/2" through flowmasters , quite loud, I was questioned about it when the car was inspected for licensing, I  got a pass as the guy was sick of seeing Mustangs coming through Im sure..[just] You cant even fart in your own car and you get a fine in my country...Pfft!
 
I dont have a radio I just love the sound  just make it so you can fit resonators if it drives you nuts.

I think I got the two mixed up. I HAVE the resonators but no mufflers. How will this exhaust sound with the Headers and resonators only? Should I invest in a set of mufflers?
If so, where's the best place to get a set and do you have any recommendations?

You are correct, the factory used mufflers at the back and resonators infront of the axle.  Most aftermarket systems do away with the mufflers at the rear and put them infront of the axle where the resonators used to be.  Flowmasters will be loud.  Which ones are you using....the 40 or 50 series?   The 40's will be extremely loud.  You'll probably want a resonator of some kind at least for the drone that you'll have. 

I've got a complete Accuarate Exhaust system on my 318 car and it's loud.  That's with muffler AND resonators.

Mine don,t sound too bad with the complete factory system from accurate behind my 440 but damn  she sounded like a Monster truck rapping the throttle with just the resonators , Instant satisfaction.

Well, here's what I have:

360 .30 over with performance cam/ upgraded pistons/ 318 heads with 360 valves (for increased compression) and headers.
Will just the resonators sound nice or will it be too loud? I don't have a BB so I'm hopeful it'll be a little less aggressive.

Exhaust sound is too subjective.  Just run the mufflers infront of the axle.  If it's too loud, add a small tube style resonator after the axle.

That's the plan- only running the mufflers for now. I do want to install my set of heat shields near the tank and
I can't figure out exactly where they install. Does anyone have a photo or diagram? I might decide to add the tube resonators later and I want the heat shields up there just in case.

The shields basically fall right into place.  The rear hanger assembly holds the back of the shield up.  The front of the shield mounts to an ear on the shock x-member.  Once the front/rear are secure, you can mark the three holes that get drilled in the frame.  If your frame hasn't had any work done in that area, the holes should still be there.

They are simple to install. the 2 slotted holes are for the ends!!,.. the support hanger for your muffler bracket w studs through your trunk floor and through the shield in these slots. There are indents in the trunk floor that show the exhaust flow and exhaust tip angle. A square indent is where the bracket goes.
There are 2 body bolts for the side support and 1 for the front of the shield bolts by the shock in a support area.
