When this thread started, my fuel gauge was working. Last week it would only read empty. After substituting a variable resistor at the sending unit, I confirmed that the gauge and wiring was fine. Removed the sending unit and found the float filled with fuel. Replaced the float with the one from my 5/16" sending unit and all is fine.

Did you find your trouble yet Glennster?

When I replaced my tank and sender unit the old sender float was about 1/4 full of gas too. Still seemed to read ok but nothing lasts forever.

What resistance did you use from the variable resistor?

From memory, the sending units read 12 Ohms when the tank is full. Around 70 Ohms when empty.

I used 10 ohms for full and 70 for empty. MEK has a good memory.
