I've always thought the standard gauge arrangement was odd if not backwards. On my Roadrunner's Rallye dash the gas gauge is on the far right instead of right beside the speedometer. I've looked at those in dash tachs, but I'm probably going to go with a period correct tach mounted in front of the blank gauge on far right.

Yeah, that's the setup that I used to have. It looks and works just fine. I know that the ideal place for the tach is right next to the speedometer, but in front of the clock position works too. It is centered on the car and I think you can keep a better eye on the road infront of you when you have it hammered. It is also outside of the steering wheel so you don't have to keep looking through the steering wheel to try to see it.
I wanted my dash to look more original so this tach was a no-brainer. I was already used to looking in that location for tach info, and it looks as good a factory.
This is what my dash looked like in high school.
