Converting 4 speed A833 to an OD
« on: July 07, 2013 - 01:48:38 PM »
Just looking for options to convert my close ratio 4 speed to OD. I know about the still unavailable Passon 5speed, but dont want to spend $4 grand plus, and their 4 speed OD is still at least $2000 total. Im looking for a DIY job that I can handle in my garage, which is at most just swapping the tranny out. That should keep the cost down a little.
I want to keep things 23 spline for cost reasons, and not have to modify anything such as the tunnel.
What is my best bet? Ive heard of pickup truck units. Is that feasible?
What about just a rebuild kit? What are my options and estimated cost?
Thanks for any advice.

Btw, I have a 3.54 dana rear, and I am just tired of running 4k rpm at highway speeds. Dont feel comfortable taking the car on road trips, and I wish I could.

The cheapest fix is the Truck 833OD , the 34 shfit lever is reversed & points down this puts 3rd / OD in the 4th position , there is a bit of fiddling to use the best lever & you need to bend the 3-4 shift rod or use the ends off the truck rods & weld a new rod so it will not interfere with the crossmember , you also need to trim the front brg retainer down to 4.80 to fit into the belhousing & drill / tap the rear mount holes on the tail housing to mount the shifter , other wise it is a bolt in & uses the same 23 spline clutch , belhousing , mount , driveshaft , shifter & shift rods other than the 3-4 .
Next best is the gear vendors conversion which bolts onto & replaces the tailhousing but it is not cheap either .
