How far back for H-pipe?

Every engine will have different exhaust temperatures due to it's build and so the ideal location for the balance pipe will vary.
The correct place for the H crossover can be determined (oldschool backyard method )by marking a crayon line along the pipe,start the engine and get up to temp and the point where the crayon melts to is the ideal location for the crossover pipe.
Of course by necessity things like trannys in the way can over ride the best location.  

I thought that old school method was for header extensions only, not for full exhaust? I also thought it was to be checked after a hard run or 1/4 mile pass. Given that i would think the crayon would melt within a foot or so of the header collector, hardly any room in most cars to stick it there.

I'd try and put it back far enough to get the tranny out without dropping the exhaust. Mine was too close for comfort.And then I had to alter it for the 5 speed. 1 " can make it or break it.

An H-pipe (or X-pipe) allows each exhaust pulse to travel through both mufflers thereby reduceing back pressure.  This is why you can run say 3" pipes up to the H then reduce down to 2.5" after without adding restriction.  Its alot easier to run 2.5" tailpipes than 3".

I ended up having a muffler shop weld up the whole thging and cut an H-pipe in as well.  Sounds nasty now with the 40 series muffs.  Resonance isn't tooo bad.LOL  Just have to find the sweet spot while cruising.

They cut the H-pipe far enough back to drop the trans through it.

As long as the pressure can crossover bfore the muffler you will be fine

I just spent some extra time TRYING to capture the difference before and after H-pipe installation.
Yes I admit my camara skills leaves a lot to be desired, and my audio equipment even more so...
But it is the weather that sadens me the most

Did I jet my point across..... A "smoother tone to the ear" after H-pipe ?
Should I cut some of the footage out ?
Ohh well,...here goes, for your ears only... feedback welcome.
