Researching a vehicle's history
« on: June 25, 2014 - 02:22:34 PM »
I want to do a complete vehicle history report on my Chally but cannot use CARFAX due to the age of the car. The state I want to run the report has a form you fill out and send money for each previous owner the database finds

My question, has anyone tried this with their own cars and what luck did you have? Did you get an uncertified report or certified report? Does the DMV database have info form the easy 70's?

I was able to trace my car back to the dealer in Miami that sold it new, this was back in 94. I had a friend try it a couple of years ago he was not able to find much out. I think the new privacy laws in some states don't allow the DMV to give out this information anymore.

probably both good and bad.  its a bummer that it limits our knowledge of our cars, but I wouldn't necessarily want anyone tracking me down...

Depends on the state... I was able to pay the fee for OK, where the car was originally from, and got lots of titles and registrations.  Allowed me to know all owners from 1970-1990... Well worth the $15... Missouri, where I live, however, requires you to be in the business of cars, in other words, owning the vehicle does not allow you to access records, due to privacy laws...  If your state allows you access, I say give it a shot. Also, if you know the cars original state, I would try there as well..

I was able to talk to the original owner of the car, he had some great stories and also provided with me some information and leads that allowed me to later find the #'s matching engine and purchase it!

Am I correct in clarifying the title / reg. search will only show the reg. owners?
This thought may not be politically correct, but is an opinion offered. It may be correct? or it may be wrong? It is not designed to appease those needing shelter from the real world.

My Vin was...........JH23-H0B-182687........a 1970 340 Red with Black vinyl top as seen in my avitar...........I got some feelers out but no luck yet......

When I was able to get money through the state of OK, it was much more information than that. I received copies of all titles....

The online services won't work for such an old car.

If you could find a friendly law enforcement agents, their databases will show a lot more.

Mine didn't show up because it had not been registered in the the US in over 10 years (actually 20 years), but that's the cutoff to the national database. So I was told when I tried it.

I emailed the state DMV and they were kind enough to reply that their database only went to 1980 so I saved the money and the time to fill out the required forms.
