When we started resoring our car, it looked pretty good. We knew we had a few trouble spots we were going to deal with, but we thought "nothing major". Well, when we went to sandblasting the car, ALL the trouble spots were VERY apparent. I know what you are feeling...what have I got myself into....right? Don't be discouraged. You can do this!
We had to replace a lot of sheet metal (floor pans, trunk pans) and fill all kinds of holes. We did it and we're first timers to the resto process, so you can do it too.
As far as the wheel housings, we got sheet metal and cut, bent, and welded them in place. We ground down the welds, filled the seams and painted. No magic to it. Our motto was (and still is) "Cut to size, Beat to fit, Paint to match". We did that with the floor boards too. Here's the befor and after pic. (you might have already seen it on the website)
Good luck. I personally think you made the right decision. Just my 2 cents.
