heater control questions

I am restoring the heating system in my 72 A/C car. The cabling and control valve are both removed making it a bit of a challenge. I received both of them in a large box of parts when I got the car. Exactly how does that system work? Does the heater control cable operate that underhood valve or does it go to an air door on the heater box? the car has an inline manual valve between the waterpump and the heater core - I guess thats a poor mans heater control? I assume the OEM heater valve mounts on the passenger fender well? Are the heater valves problematic?   

A service manual would answer a lot of my questions here - anyone got a copy on CD for sale?

I had to replace all of that on my car also.  They actually make a reproduction valve (under the hood on the inner fender) that I put on my car.  The cable for the heater control actually runs to this valve.  As far as all of the swithcing (A/C, Def....) That is all neumatic.  (spelling?)  I will have to check to see if I have the sheet for this.  The problem that I am having is that the blower doesn't feel like it is blowing very hard. I will have to look in to this and see if that is just normal.  I hope this helps a little.  I will see if I can find the build sheet for that.   :thumbs:

hmmm...my blower is behaving the same way. I need to check it and make sure it isn't the motor. When I pulled my AC/heat control, the plug for the fan switch was stuck to the switch and the plastic on the plug was melted. I didn't realize this when I pulled on it and the guts of the switch stayed with the plug  :ack:  So I am looking for a switch now.

The slow fan RPM problem might be the result of excessive resistance in the switch? I assume the high speed circuit has no resistance and the slow speed has a resisitor somewhere that drops the voltage to the blower? 

Where did you find the repro heat valve?

I got it actually from a ma and pops parts store here in town called Snow Auto.  It doesn't look exactly like the original but is the replacement for it.  This one looks a lot better anyways, a lot smaller.   Here are some pictures of mine installed.  As far as a new switch, Year one has the nuematic part that is on the back of the switch.  I see some of those switches on E-bay every now and again.  I actually bought one from a guy on there and it was in worse shape than mine so be very cautious if you go that route.   :thumbs:

well yes and no; I called them and they have one in stock but won't take credit cards. After doing some more research I have found some other units in the $50-60 range. I have the heater plenum out of the car right now and am going to rebuild it and do some sheet metal wizardry on the fresh air duct. Once I get that taken care of, I want to test my original unit and see if it is faulty. Probably need to buy a replacement any way
