Radial tire sizes for AAR
« on: November 08, 2012 - 09:52:56 AM »
I want to get some wheels and tires for driving my AAR, and store my show tire original Polyglas E60s and G60s.  I am wondering if I should keep the tire dimensions as close to original as possible, to match the original steering and suspension geometry.  That would indicate a 215R55X17 on the front and a 225R55X17 on the rear.  Those tires offer the best speed rated rubber and yet retain the E60 and G60 diameter, width, and revolutions per mile.  What do you guys think?  Is it important to keep the tire dimensions the same as stock?

A modest increase in tire size should not hurt but when going radial I've found that the diameters shown in the charts do not coincide with reality.  I've been disappointed to find that my rpm's increase significantly with radials when trying to size them with comparable bias.  So, you have to go larger by at least one full size with radial.

Not sure what you mean by this, I have measured the 225R55X17 tires that have a spec of 26.8" in diameter and they are, and the width is also as the spec sheet says.  Also, the specs for the E60 and G60 Polyglas as as advertised too, I have measured those as well.

It depends on the look you want , the speedo will be more accurate with the correct diameter , I would be looking for added width personally

A slight change in overal diameter or width won't be a huge impact to any of the steering geometry. The bias ply alignment will be a bigger detriment to things than the change in tire size as you won't be utilizing the radials ability to provide added performance. Like CP said, keeping the diameter close to stock will  keep the speedo more accurate.

If you do get radials I'd get a front end alignment done to take advantage of the radial specs over the bia ply's? I'm understanding your just wanting the bias plys for shows?
