Cat?
« on: January 06, 2013 - 09:11:15 PM »
This is from a 2010 Challenger exhaust.  Is it a muffler or a cat?  Thanks.

It's a cat. I'm surprised there is no downstream o2 sensor.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Thanks guys.  I now know how to recycle this piece.  The x-pipe and the tips from the system are going on a 70 Cuda.

Just confused but is it a cat or is a center muffler?  :clueless:

Looking at this link, the cats are just below the exhaust manifolds.  It appears that there is a center muffler then rear mufflers.  :dunno:

Those are factory "Cherry bombs"  I bought a second factory exhaust to build a custom setup for my '12.  When I cut that off It's straight through.  The cats are indeed part #4 in the diagram above.  They know some people cut the cats off so they moved them as close to the manifolds as possible.  Right before the "suitcase" muffler was the clamp to remove the muffler and tailpipes.  hence the "cat back" system was easily replaceable.
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

Does this muffler have a solid wall between the two where it could be used as two mufflers or does it have to stay the way it is.  I need something for an old truck.  I'd rather use it than recycle it.

Honestly I don't know.  I didn't cut mine open.  They do have the 2 straight through holes punched vertically through them but if I had to guess I'd say that they're probably made with a bunch of glass wadding with the 2 perforated pipes run through it.  I imagine if you cut it in half you'd have exhaust leaks along the cut line.  If you're creative maybe you can pinch them shut and weld it? Or maybe just plug the inlet and outlet on the side you're not using?

It is an open muffler with two pipes going through it.  I was able to cut up another one from a wrecked car.
