Right Brake Light Does Not Work
« on: January 20, 2013 - 05:44:41 PM »
1970 Cuda

The Good News:
Side Running lights work
Head lights work (High Beams and Low Beams)
Fog lights Work
Turn Signal Lights Work
Reverse Back Up Lights Work

The Bad News:
Emergency Flasher Lights work except right Rear Light flashes very dim
Only the Left Brake Light Works

I purchased all new bulbs (Running lights, Head lights, Tail Lights and Backup Lights)
I swapped Tail Lights to confirm that the problem is not the bulb
I followed the Brown Wire from the rear right tail light to the plug located just under the dash on the drivers side
When I press the brake pedal, there is no current going to the Brown Wire (from under the dash) but if I move the turn signal for a right turn, there is current to the Brown Wire. My turn signals work great.

Please correct me if I am wrong:

1.) The rear turn signals, the rear emergency flasher and brake lights use the same filament in the rear tail lights
2.) The brake switch has a White Wire that is connected to the turn signal switch
3.) When I press the brake pedal, this White Wire must complete a circuit in the turn signal switch to activate both brake lights
4.) Both the Dark Green Wire (Left Brake Tail Light Filament) and Brown Wire (Right Brake light Filament) should be getting power when the brake pedal is pressed
5.) The problem is probably located in the turn signal switch

Your assistance is much appreciated. Should my next move be to pull the steering wheel and check the turn signal switch (maybe the emergency flasher switch as well)?

Thank you!

you are correct power goes to the turn signal switch & trough to the taillights , the circuit is interupted in the switch to blink the turn light. the dim light could be a bad ground too

Thank you Chryco, much appreciated.

The problem turned out to be a faulty turn signal switch component. It was the piece that rotates when you move the turn signal lever up or down when turning. The wires on the bottom of this piece were not touching the contacts for both right and left brake light wires at the same time. Looks like this is working now. Thanks again,  :ylsuper:
