Basic Eaton Posi question

I have been looking into installing a posi in my 'cuda.  Correct me if this is wrong.

The Eaton Detroit Locker spins both tires and has clutches to let one tire spin faster while going around a corner.

The Eaton Trutrac switches power from one tire to the other as needed.

What does the Auburn do?

Was the SureGrip an Auburn?

Which one do you guys prefer?

This will be used for street cruises and occasional street light romps.

I am not all that concerned about rebuildability.  I doubt that I will wear out a set of tires anytime soon, let alone a rear end.

Trutrac is the best , simply genius they use a worm gear so the gear angle lock with power & unlocks with axle feed so it is never sticky in corners & always lock with power , it also uses no clutches so there is nothing to wear out .
Lockers are notchy , old tech
 Sure grips came in 2 varieties
 Cone & clutch
 Auburn is a cone , as the cone wears it eventually bottoms out bcoming ineffective
 clutch type are far stronger & have replacable clutches on both sides
 Both have to overcome the grip to corner

I am looking at getting a Trutrac also.I heard the locker is too hrash for street use for most guys.

i fitted a trutrac to my challenger and its great,smooth and quiet,some people will tell you that you have to change to the green type axle bearings with this unit ,but this untrue as the trutrac comes with a spacer to set axle backlash. :working:

I ordered a trutrac in my new Dana . Seems great . I'm impressed on how straight it goes even when the tires are spinning!

I recently got a new limited slip differential for my SRT-6 and now need one for the Challenger. Choosing the one for the SRT was easy, there is only 1. With the challenger, there are a few different part numbers available, a 30-spline & a 33-spline.  How do I find out which one I need? Do I get one based off my rear end (8¾) & ratio (3.23)? Or do I need other info like carrier numbers, etc...?

Stock differential will be 30 spline. The Auburn, True Trac and Eaton LSD fit all 8 3/4 carriers. Quite a few members here like the True Trac - I run the Auburn and love it but may also try a True Trac in the future. I sell them all and they are all great units - slight differences with them all including construction and operation.

Pardon my ignorance, but where does the 33 spline come into play? Can I find out without opening the diff? The engine is not original to the car so there is a slight chance the rest of the drivetrain is not either.

33 spline will require custom axles built - like Moser or Strange. Very unlikely you would have them although I have been wrong before. You will have to pull an axle shaft and count the splines to find out. I am in Canada so shipping would probably kill the deal  :bigsmile:. Jegs and Summit price them well. I have no problem answering questions  and I have been known to share a few opinions.

Cool! Thanks for the info. I'm considering the purchase of some new 3-piece forged race wheels, 9 or 9.5" on the rear and I'll want the diff to supplement the added traction. :)

I got my TruTrac setup when I bought my 3.55 rear chunk....

I have had a few (modern) vehicles with posi/sure grip...got it from Dr Diff  (AWESOME vendor by the way!!!!!) .....and the difference is noticeable to me.....the tires "stick" much better when taking off, even in conditions where traction is uneven left to right.....

Hard for me to describe.  Just feels "different".  I like it.

My smallblock is not pumping out gobs of torque, so burnouts are not all that common, but when I do them, the rear end locks up and GRABS quickly when I want it to......it will still "fishtail" some though......just a little.

I cant speak to how it will handle under large HP use.....
