Markings on the lower timing gear?

Did some egyptian pharaoh f*ck with my car?





What do these markings on the lower gear mean?

As it stands, the upper gear marking will somewhat line up with the lower gear "Upper triangle" marking...

What the hell? Is this supposed to tell me anything? How do I know if that is the correct setting or not?

I don't remember what each mark indicates directly, but one is for 4 deg advanced, one is 4 deg. retarded and
the last dot is straight up timing. If you bought this set new, the instructions will tell you for sure.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Standard Timing Location: This is the same as original O.E.M. setting. Use keyway marked “O” and
crankshaft gear tooth marked “O”.

4 Degree Advance: Use keyway marked “Δ” (triangle) and the crankshaft gear tooth marked “Δ” (triangle).
Note: The “Δ” or advanced position should not be used without degreeing the camshaft. Many camshafts
have the proper advance built into the camshaft. Advancing the camshaft will reduce the intake valve to
piston clearance and increase exhaust piston to valve clearance.

4 Degree Retard: Use keyway marked “ ڤ” (Rectangle or Square) and crankshaft gear tooth marked “ ”ڤ
(Rectangle or Square). Note: The “ ڤ” or retarded position should not be used without degreeing the
camshaft. Many camshafts have the proper advance built into the camshaft. Retarding the camshaft will
reduce exhaust valve to piston clearance and increases intake piston to valve clearance.

So, mine is obviously set to the TRIANGLE, which means 4 degree advance...
But what does that mean? How does this effect the power and general behavior of the engine? Will it affect the idle running when I change position to "O"  STANDARD TIMING POSITION.

advancing the cam will lower the powerband slightly .
 Really you need a degree wheel , often the cams are not ground "true" so the builder may have advanced the cam to get it to line up correctly with the crank , , the only way to confirm this is with a piston stop & a degree wheel .  The worst cam I ever found was ground 11* off so if you did not check it with a degree wheel & just lined up the dots the engine would barely run & never make good power , almost as if the chain had jumped 1 tooth !!

which ever way you decide to run it make sure what key way you use. you use the right mark to align with the cam gear i had a buddy use one symbol on the crank and then the wrong symbol lined up with the cam gear. he had instant bent valves!!
