4-Link and wide tires
« on: November 28, 2012 - 06:37:29 PM »
Hey guys if I install a Street-Lynx 70-74 E-body rear suspention, Does that open up the rear for wider tires? Should I then only be limited by the space in the wheel well opening?

Yes by removing the leaf springs you have the whole wheel well available , not sure well it will handle though , you will need a panhard bar to keep the diff centered , the rear will no longer aid steering & shock choice will be critical

I believe that setup is triangulated and does not require a panhard bar. It also comes with double adjustable coilover shocks. Is anyone running that setup? Just wandering how it handles and how hard it is to get adjusted in correctly. I have never had any experience with a 4-link before.  :clueless:

Well I am not sure about that system but I believe it doesn't have numerous mounting points like a true 4 link so you get what you get as far as angles for the bars , & without a panhard bar it would have to deflect somewhat cornering . double adjustable shocks are the best way to go but quality will vary depending who makes the shocks

The street-lynx is a triangulated system. I think Chryco's right about them being nonadjustable, or very limited.

The reason I thought of going with the Street-Lynx is because I have an Alterktion coil-over system for the front end. I am not sure if a three link or a four link or which type would be better for my needs. I would like to put some kind of a modern rear suspention under the Cuda. I cloned a 73 Barracuda into a 1971 Cuda so trying to keep it original is not an issue. I am putting a 512 stroker in it. Not a race car but will definately need help with traction. It will spend 95% of the time on the street. Maybe 5% or less at the track. So ride and handling are critical too. Needs to be user friendly....cause like I said I have no experience in setting up a suspention. Do they make such a thing? What do you subjest?

Bill Reilly has done a lot of homework in his systems so he has approached the 4 link rear with the same amount of research as his front coil over systems. If you are really interested in it, he will help you dial in what it needs. The install is not radically difficult to do, based on what I've seen and read about, no first hand experience, but it isn't a straight nolt in like the front. Once installed, however, there is not any adjustment required except for the shock settings.

I'd also point out that a triangulated four link is a set up similar to GM A bodies (Chevelle, 442, GS, GTO) so it will have some of the same benefits/drawbacks as that system in those cars. Squat and wheelhop can be controlled with shock and spring setups which Bill can help choose for you.

HP2 may have some better advice but you can get a long way on stock suspension , it was one of the best designs , especially for the era , Brad used offset spring hangers , moved the spring inward & went to a lightweight composite leaf spring , added a hollow sway bar & good double adjustable shocks , probably will cost less to do that as well
