VIN tag prep for new dash?
« on: December 02, 2012 - 08:29:59 AM »
I'm getting a new dash and need to clean up my VIN tag.

I'm wondering if it would be good to have it powder coated?
Or is just rattle can paint good enough. Car is only a driver, but would like it to last.

After painting, I plan on using the ECS silk screen logo.
Should the color be semi-gloss?

Any tips or hints for the project are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

When I did mine, I used a glass bead blaster to strip off the paint. A word of caution here.... even though I held the gun away it curled up like a banana. I just about had kittens. I then blasted the other side and it came back .
I just used a rattle can of black trim paint. ( semi gloss) then applied the ECS decal and rivits.

Will be doing the same to mine shortly.  Not familiar with what your guys are referring too as ECS decal/silkscreen?  Can you explain further or provide pics or internet link to what you're talking about please?
Thanks

Luckily mine was just dirty.  The Chrysler logo was still in good shape.  I'd be scared of blasting the tag.  I'd probably chemically strip the paint off of it.  If you really wanted to blast it, I'd rig up a soda blaster.  There are instructions online how to make one out of an air nozzle, some tubing and a box of baking soda.  That shouldn't damage the tag.

I think SEM Trim Black would be a good paint for it.  It's pretty durable.

Have a good look at the pad before you install the tag.  My pad was very thick with foam in the tag area.  If I would have just riveted it down, the foam would have compressed and the tag would have distorted.  I ended up trimming the foam and vinyl from around the rivet holes and built it back up with a couple washers.  There was no foam under the rivets to compress this way.

Just to verify, are the letters and numbers supposed to be black or white?

The entire tag is black.  After years of wiping down the dash, the paint wore off of the raised VIN numbers.
