Looking at a unit yesterday (non mope ) The end of the converter shaft had 2 spots on it (the end that goes into the pump) that were blue! This unit was just installed maybe 2 weeks ago. Not by me BTW. I understand blue= excessive heat! And the lip was a little sharp. I say the converter was not seated properly upon install. Or maybe the lines werent blown out and metal from the old one got sucked into the pump? I'd appriciate opinions, bet Terry would know, havent seen him post lately...

without seeing a picture, what you describe sounds like a heat related problem, although being discolored in only 2 spots is curios. caused by either clearances being too tight, or lack of lubrication, or both. did you take a photo?

Sorry . no pic, definite heat build up. Its on the end that goes into the pump, not the typical weld "blue" at te converter body. I gotta think an installation issue.

if you sucked it tight without the pump tabs lined up it would break the pump tabs off & the pump would not be working . Maybe it was blue when installed ? What caused you to pull it apart ?

Bigs, what unit was it? Some times the converter company's temper (blue) the hub where it contacts the pump gear.

Terry & Neil, this was a unit that was in a truck that I'd driven 4 or 5 times before we took it apart. Its a 4R100, customer brought it back adter 2 weeks, the end of the converter (pump end) was blue in 2 spots , the edge was a bit sharp and hard metal grit when I ran my finger around the inside. To me it seems the conv got jammed onto the pump. I'm really thinking this was a mis-installation...

If that is the case Bigs, the trans pan will be full of metal (aluminum) from the pump stator getting ate into from the inner pump gear.
