Steering Shaft Confusion
« on: November 26, 2014 - 01:21:10 PM »
Hey Guys and Gals,

I have two 1973 Challenger Steering columns that I took apart to restore. I did not realize that when I took them apart that they were slightly different. They both do not have a column shift. The Couplings that go on the end of the steering shaft that attaches to the steering box are two different sizes. Also one steering shaft is shorter than the other. I would assume that the short steering shaft would get the longer coupling and the longer steering shaft would get the shorter coupling. Is my assumption correct? Are they both correct for my car? Is one better than the other? Does a shorter or longer shaft have anything to do with being a Four Speed vs Automatic or Manual steering vs Power steering? Are there any other differences between the two. I did not realize when I took them apart that they were different until I started sanding and prepping them for paint. Any Help would be appreciated.I have attached photos of the shaft and the couplings. Everyone have a great & Safe Thanksgiving!

One is probably for power steering, the other for manual steering.  Manual steering takes a longer shaft.  It's also possible that one of the shafts has collapsed a little bit.  It's designed to collapse in an accident.  They are held together by plastic that was injected into the shaft.  If that plastic breaks, the inner shaft can move in and out a little.

Normally i would agree with Burdar, but the difference in the length of shafts looks pretty small so i don't think that is it.

It would seem to make sense to use the longer coupler withthe shorter shaft , no clue why the difference or which is technically correct though

 the diffence is beetwen manual steering/Power steering, but i Think those 2 you have áre the same, but one is collapsed a bit.so ,the lower portion off the shaft differs between manual vs Power,so look at pics in old threads.as i dont remember what is what.
