steering box leak
« on: February 02, 2013 - 05:30:00 AM »
I replaced a few seals when the box was out of the car, and they are fine. The box is leaking from the huge nut on the input shaft side.  The box feels good, no exessive wear or slop, so I preffer keeping the box over replacing it.  I did find and article on rebuilding an older type box ,and that had an O-ring around the nut. Is that the same on e-body boxes?  Can I take that nut off and replace the o-ring just like on the old boxes?

hmmm.... looks like pretty complicated surgery.   :clueless:    Manual speaks of a bunch of special tools. Is there a place on the web where I can actually see the tools?
My guess is the big O-rings on the piston head are leaking. Looks like the entire box has to come out and apart....  :P

When mine was leaking there. We took the steering box out and I sent it out and had it rebuilt.

hi Jacky
I guess it will have to come out then.  gonna be fun with a 440 with headers  :-\   Got the feeling I will try to find a decent passenger side manifold, as mine has a crack.  I`m kinda done with headers ,nothing but pita  :eek4:

I tried the Lucas stuff for my power steering pump leak in the Daytona. I still had to replace it.  , Bart . Good luck with everything. With me having a small block it is not nearly as tight to get at working on it. Plus, I am not stopping at the gas pump as much.  :poopoke:
