Starter relay/ voltage limiter

Do not have a potentiometer myself.

Check the resisitance across the gauge posts with all wires disconnected, I'm thinking you are going to read infinite.

Some photos of what I am working with.
\With the multimeter set on its current setting I touched the probes on the post of the guages in the car.Disconected all wires. Got no readings. Did the same on my old gauges and got readings seen in pics. Have not yet opened my old VR. In the pics it has the higher readings the touched with the probes.
 Do these pics help in telling us anything ?
 Is the next set to put an old gauge in the car dash cluster, put my old VR in  , and see if it works. Can always use newer gauge faces on my old guages

The gauges that gave no reading (infinite) are done. The other gauges are probably good. Hook them up with a new voltage limiter and you will most likely be ok.

Thanks dodj, was just posting the below question as you posted. I will go ahead and remove the gauges in the car.
 Is the better option to buy this adjustable VL locally, put it in with my old gauges. Do the pics show that my old gauges are working. They had a bit of surface rust inside them but fine wiring still connected.

If I pull my old VL apart and it looks ok, am I going to do any damage to gauges that are working if I install it and it turns out to be bad. Will it burn the gauges ?

Have just peeled the original VL apart and it looks good. Fine wire is all connected. Does this mean it's fully working ?

  I'm not familiar with your multi-meter, but I would think you would use the "com" and the "V-ohm" terminals.

Thanks for the continued help Scott and Mike. Hope to get back to gauges in a few days after xmas rush. I have put a tempory after market water temp gauge and oil pressure. Want family and visitors to see car in its near finished form ,rather than with wires hanging out everywhere. Will only be going for 40 yard drives  up and down driveway. Got all major panels on the front yesterday. Will post pics on my resto tonight.

Car has been back on the road for 2 weeks now. Time to get the gauges sorted. Pulled the dash apart to get to gauges. Not good news as you can see from photo. Gauge wire is burned.
 Brought a new limiter from a local business. Will put good gauge faces on old gauge housings and with some luck all should be good. Will make sure dial is set for 5 volt.
