which fluid for 727?

whats the best fluid for my 727 slap stick?  has reverse body, shift kit, tranny cooler, and 8 quart B&M alum pan.  it downshifts a little hard from 3rd to 2nd until its really warm/hot, i assume the tranny cooler is not letting it reach operating temp quick enough.  synthetic?

I'm sure anything off the shelf ( Dextron?? ) would be OK.

  A BIG Welcome to you.  :beer: I think you might have other problems. Is the tranny new? There sounds like there is a problem in there.

Im using the Chrysler ATF +3 with great results. I believe its made by quaker state

Auto trannys are definatly my weak area , I have heard both good & bad about synthetic fluid in autos, F types offers more friction internally but from what I know you have to run F type right from the intial fill , any dexron 3 from a good company should work fine

I've been running type F in my 727 since it was rebuilt and it has worked fine for me. I went with type F for the same reason Chryco stated, more friction.

well, it was rebuilt about 13k miles ago, so i guess i will use Dexron 3 from a good company. 

MEKrunner-why do you think there is a problem? as stated, it seems to downshift a little hard from 3rd to 2nd only when my water temp is below 180.  after it warms up to a solid 190-195, no more problems. all other downshifts and all upshifts are fine when cold, but they are quicker and more solid when at operating temp.  i will cover up my tranny cooler w/ something next time and see if i have the same problem.

i will change the fluid this spring, its been in there for about 3-4 years, but only like 1,000 miles!

  I was under the impression this was a new problem. Has it been doing this for 1000 miles?, 13,000 miles?It could be the fluid. That would be an easy fix. Anyway, I thought that tranny coolers kind of worker like radiators in that they wouldn't really cool until a certain temp. was reached. Maybe that is just some coolers???

it always downshifted hard from 3 to 2 when cold.  i think a tranny cooler is not exactly the same as a radiator since the cooling system uses a t-stat to allow the system to reach operatiing temp, then the tstat opens, fluid circulates, it cools down, tstat closes, and it cycles.  since tranny fluid is always circulating through the tranny cooler, it seems that it takes too long for the tranny fluid to reach operating temps, sort of like running an engine w/ no t-stat in colder weather.  could this be the reason?
