rebuilt 1970 440
« on: February 13, 2013 - 09:12:24 PM »
I have a guy who wants to sell me a rebuilt 440.  Don't know what parts or how much overbore. I don't think he knows.
Did not have heads on it when he got it and he just set some heads on the motor.
Don't know anything else aside from it's a date coded 1970.  Not sure it it's early or late.

What should I pay for this?

What things should I look for when I go look at it.

Josh, you need to pull the heads off to get an idea of what piston height it has and if there is valve reliefs cut .   Unknown bb should be considerd as a core engine, if he doesnt know anything about it himself. Crank macnine work for bearing size?  Cast or steel?  3 bolt or single bolt solid or hydraulic?  Sometimes you get lucky, and LOTS of times you are getting a thrown together ball honed re ringed block, used cam and worn out lifters.   You ever notice the engines I sell ?  I make sure someone is getting good parts if it is 1500 and up.  Your in Colorado, so make sure the block hasn't been frozen and cracked under the intake. Just don't pay a premium price for a specific year, that only works for date codes and numbers match stuff

500-700 long block would be max to me

Pull the pan and a head. That will tell the story if it is really rebuilt and depending on machine work how quality of a build it was.

Heck if the heads are already off, check the bore diameter and see how far the motor has been taken. If she is already at .60 over then you know she's near the end unless you like sleeving (I don't).

If you take a pic of the raised deck area I can tell you more about the motor.

I will take pictures of the motor when I see it.

Maybe tonight or tomorrow.

Oh, not tonight, valentines, I have to cook dinner.

Tomorrow then.
