70 cuda exhaust
« on: March 30, 2013 - 09:16:26 AM »
Hello i am new to this forum,i am from australia.I own a 70 cuda 440 six pack.It is a real v code car and is all numbers matching. It has 2 fender tags and is a red car red interior.I have owned the car for 26 years and the car has been in australia since 1973.It is a californian car (hope i spelt that correctly). It does not have the chrome exhaust tips and the exhaust exits under the rear valance.I am led to believe this is correct,is this so?Also if this is correct should it have rear mufflers on it?At the moment the car does not have them.It does mention some code on the fender tag about exhaust but cannot rember what it is at the moment.Any help is appreciated.

If the car was built for California, then yes it will have the exhaust exiting below the valance.  I think the code for it is N96  :clueless:  I will have to look at my tag to see.

N95 is the emissions control system (California carbs)
N96 is fresh air system (Shaker on Challengers, Air grabber on road runners, etc)
N97 is the Noise Reduction package (which I believe is the turn down exhaust tips)
N41 is Dual Exhaust
N42 is Bright Exhaust Tips (chrome)

Stock I believe that all E Bodies had resonators and mufflers, the placement of which may have varied across different years...I am not 100% sure

It's N97 Noise Reduction Package: http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/dealerships/SalesmansPocketGuides/1970/Pg%20032.jpg
It includes Barracuda rear valance and turn down tip mufflers, so no N42 tips with that code on same tag.

Your Cuda left the factory with two restonators and two mufflers with turn downs under the rear valance. No tips.
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

Gran coupes had down turn tips, I remember buying a 1970 cuda exhaust for my 74 back in 1983 at Napa, i then cutout the valance for round tip's
I was busted for having glasspacks that exited the side, i was pulled over by a then rare lady cop, i was driving and saw her pulled over a buddy and as i drove by I revved it up, well she chased me down and pulled me over and said she didnt like her ball's busted...hahaha

Holi smokes batman that ride is loaded. Any pictures. Red on Red.
E-body owners dream car...
All California plymouth barracuda's, Gr Cpe's, Cuda's exhausts exited under the valance no matter where built.
Your ride had Resonators    N97 noise reduction package.
Only the AAR and T/A challenger exempt from resonators.

I knew it had alot of options on it.Whoever bought it new must of had a fat wallet. When i bought it in 1987 a truck driver owned it,he was using it as a daily driver. When i got it home i found all of the vacuum lines had been removed from the carbies and all of the linkages made to work as one?? It had one of those big yellow accel coils mounted on the inner fender and all of the wiring in the engine bay was butchered.Somebody had also added an electric fuel pump.It had hooker headers and alloy rocker covers.6 months after owning it i stripped it back to bare metal and rebuilt it.Luckily every thing was on the car just filthy. The car will never be a concoures car as back in the late 80s when it was rebuilt there was no information available here in australia so i had to look in magazine to see how it should look.Luckily i was able to use alot of australian chrysler clips etc for the wiring and hoses so it at least looked like it was factory.I was able to get the correct exhaust manifolds from a swap meet. You would be suprised what turns up at our swap meets. The other reason it will never be concoures is that i believe in driving it,thats what the were built for.I go on a cruise that is only for american cars and hot rods once a month, there are on average 300-400 cars at each cruise. The cost of the rebuild was very little as i did everthing myself except the paint work.Under all of the grime the interior was in good condition.I think anybody who is doing a car up should have ago as this way you can learn alot.
