I think hood pins (J45) were optional until some point in late '69, or early '70 when they were made standard. Which ever TSB it was in, it think it also had the performance hood (J54) optional on GC's and base models.

Found this for 1971 in a Barracuda brochure.  Hood pins were "standard" on the Cudas!  I didn't know that!

Man, the Challengers got short changed!!!!
Well that is because the fish cars are the sportier of the two.    :cooldancing: :woohoo:

My cuda came from the factory with out the hood pin option.   I do like the hood pins . So i am at the 50/50 stage , do i put them in or do i leave it plan ?  Do most of as think they like better with or with out pins , cheers. :dunno:
If you like them then put them on. I'm doing a repaint on my 71 Hemicuda vert (clone) and am putting on a new shaker hood because the hood that was on the car has some filler in it. My replacement hood doesn't have pin holes and I'm not putting them back on because I think they are a PIA and the cables rub and scuff the paint. I don't really like the looks of them anyway but thats just me,everybody has their own taste. I don't care about it being correct, thats why I sold my real Hemicuda so I could build one the way I liked it.

If you add the hood pins then I would remove the head gouging safety latch. The hood will close and open easier and quieter.

HAHA I second that! I don't know how many times I hit my head before I took mine off, although I will put one back on my new hood that I'm not putting the pins back on. Maybe hang a big red flag on it when the hood is up.

One good point about having them on the car is if you ever have to leave the car unattended you can put some locks on them. I have done this myself quite a few times i carry a small set in my console just a bit of theft deterrent but may help save some big bucks!

The only draw back is that the coated wires rub against the paint and can cause discoloration over time.

That's a good point.  I thought about that myself as I have seen small brass locks but the scuff plates must take a beating if you drive around with them.  I guess take them off when driving.  :dunno:
