I've read that using a return line makes the pump ( mine's electric) last longer by not "dead heading" it? It also runs quieter.  I followed Mallory's recomendations as the size of the fuel line was the same cost wise as I had to replace everything ( including the sender, installed a 1/2") anyway as my car was opriginally a /6.  I didn't get a lot of  driving in before winter came but as Neil mentioned it also allows for cooler fuel. I did have issues with fuel bouiling in the carb before ..... not now. Also after sitting for a few weeks the fuel bowls would be dry, an electric pump also solved that issue for me.
Here is where/how I plumbed in the return line.

A few more pictures of the lines, pump, filter....

I bought all the fittings and flex line from here. Much cheaper than Earls, Areoquip etc....

Looks like a heat shield may be helpful where the lines are close to exhaust/mufflers?

I installed fireproof sleeving like what was shown in the one loose fitting were the lines came close to the exhaust.  :2thumbs:
