Interior panel paint?
« on: March 06, 2013 - 09:24:38 PM »
Sorry for all the random posts but I'm trying to get a order list ready to ship and pick up in Washington as shipping to Canada kills me.

I'm looking for interior panel paint. My kick panels are mint but the wrong color so I was going to try and change them from green to red. But the main thing I want to change are the metal trim pieces around the base of the headliner. There MINT. What brand of paint do you use for this? Anyone have a procedure for prep? Results? Thanks

I've used this product with pretty good success.
Available at most Napa's.

Thanks josh. Do I need to use the stripper on the painted parts? What about the vinyl parts? Primer them? Clear coat?

I usually strip the metal parts.  Then etch primer.
bumper black on metal parts if the sheen is correct for your surroundings

I like the clear primer for areas that will get rubbed with feet or hands.   that way when the paint rubs through it doesn't stand out as grey.

Flexible parts primer on the vinyl parts for sure.
Usually two really good light coats.
Then the gloss vinyl black

I'm pretty sure they have other colors also.
Been a few years since I bought any.

Good luck!  post pics when you get to this part.

As far as the metal trim around the headliner goes...My pieces weren't rusty after 40 years.  They were just dull and scratched.  I sanded them with a fine sanding sponge in some soapy water.(dish soap)  I think I used SEM self etching primer before spraying SEM Trim Black.  The factory never used a primer so I don't think you really have to.  The parts are going to be protected since they are on the inside.

The plastic interior panels don't accept paint very well.  I cleaned mine 4 or 5 times to make sure they were very clean.  Then I used SEM Adhesion Promotor followed by SEM Landau black.  Since you are going red, you'll have to try and find a color that closely matches the factory color.  I don't know if SEM has a red that is close or not.  I found that the key to making the pieces NOT look painted is to mist the paint on.  If you spray heavy coats, it will look painted.

Also, Herb's Parts has their own line of interior paints.  I'm sure they would have the correct red you need.

Perfect thanks guys. my interior metal parts are perfect just the wrong color, I will check and see if i can find the correct color red to match. I figure i should try it and see how it holds up and looks before buying new red ones.  burdar congrats on this being your 3000th post! :bananasmi
