Bought my dad a 73 440 a couple of months ago.
« on: March 15, 2013 - 02:33:42 AM »
Hey guys,

I bought my dad a 1973 440 a couple of months ago, just looking to meet a few people and find a few parts without (hopefully) going broke!  The car sat for quite some time in New Jersey, so it's got some rust..but not quite as bad as a few I've seen on Ebay.

I'm looking for a couple corners of the window trim.  Any thought's?  My knowledge is fairly limited on Cuda's/Barracuda's, although I do know this one was originally born as a Barracuda (318 2 BBL) and now has a 440 4 barrel dual feed Holley and a Crane cam.  Attached are a few pictures of the trim pieces I'm missing.  Better run..y'all have a good one.

Welcome! Nice barracuda!

If you need that trim, I have an extra set. I can get some pictures for you, it's not concours perfect but it'll clean up well.

I also have a complete tail light ring set for 72-74 if you are interested, I see you are missing the 2 reverse trim rings..

Anywho, I have 2 1973 cars and a stockpile of parts. I just recently bought a 70 Barracuda Gran Coupe so I'm letting almost all of my 72-74 stuff go. Let me know if I can help you with anything, this is a great site with great people.

Thanks guys!  My dad still doesn't know about the car..I've been doing a little here and there to it.  I still haven't even been able to get it out on the road!  It had brakes that wouldn't stop it from rolling at 5 mph.  Did a brake job on the front, but I don't know a thing about drum brakes, so I suppose the front will do for now.

The car sounds amazing..sat since 96 (the last time it was registered in New Jersey), replaced the plugs, put fresh fuel, had the carb rebuilt and she doesn't skip a beat!  Just got some new tires for the car..which is sad, because the tread depth on all 4 tires is fantastic..the tires look brand new, minus the ring of dry rot around the side wall.

I don't know much about the previous owner, but I imagine there was some reason other than mechanics of the car that he stopped driving it.

I look forward to getting to know a few of you and hopefully posting a video of dad getting to take the car for a spin for the first time.  Although this isn't his dream car (70 Cuda 340 6 pack..he had one of these many years ago)..it's pretty close.  It's got a long way to go, but that solves the problem of buying him a wallet every Birthday and Dallas Cowboys attire every Christmas!

YellowFin, I'll PM you in a bit and hopefully we can do some dealing with the parts!

Drum brakes aren't that difficult...I did mine last fall and I had never taken them apart before.  Everything is just held together with a bunch of springs and hooks instead of bolts. I recommend doing one side at a time so you always have the other side as reference.  At the very least you should pull the dust covers off and make sure the cylinders aren't leaking and there is some meat on the pads...just for safety alone.

I suppose I better take a look at the drum brakes.  I'll youtube the dust cover suggestion and figure it out before I hand it over to him (he's definitely got experience with drum brakes).  Hopefully I'll have it out on the road soon!  Thanks for the warm welcome's..I've looked at the site fairly regularly for a while now, but finally got around to joining..wish I would have sooner!

Welcome to the site. You'll need to buy a brake adjuster tool to properly set up the drag on the shoes. Sometimes you can get away with using a flatblade screwdriver, but the tool is less than $10. There should be a slight (very) drag when you rotate the drum. As mentioned, check the wheel cylinders for leaks as well as ALL the brake lines. It'd be a pity to smash it for want of some time/labour. Good luck

Thanks for the advice!  I'll check em out when I get back home..out of pocket for now, but you got the wheels turnin upstairs.  Definitely better safe than sorry!
