heater contol knobs

Hi my dash was missing the heater control knobs . The two small crome ones . I now have an old panel but cannot seam to get the old ones off. My eyes are not the best . So is there a spring load clip that i need to move , Or do i just keep on trying to move from side to side ,They are just so dam tigth .  Am i just weak and can not just pull them straight off .  I guess they have not move in 43 years. Has any one else had this problem .

Are these A/C or NON A/C controles?  If it's NON A/C, can't you just swap the levers over?  I think here is a spring loaded washer that holdes the levers to the plastic housing.

I managed to get mine off and replated the levers.
