Rear end placement?
« on: April 18, 2013 - 11:41:47 AM »
Hello all,

Gotta a question.

Can a rear end on a 71 cuda be pulled back about an inch or two to accommodate a bit longer driveshaft or is that not an option?
I read somewhere about different lengths of driveshafts but didn't think R&R a 440 auto would make a difference.
I changed out a 440 auto with another and for some reason it doesn't seem the driveshaft (using the same one) will either slide into the tranny enough or the tranny is a little longer  :dunno:.

And just curious, how far in is the drive shaft supposed to slide into the tranny? Maybe that's what I need to look at first?  :clueless:

Thanks in advance.

if you relocate the rear diff it will look odd , I recall brad had a problem like this when he changed springs.
the yolk should go all the way into the trans bascally right to where the yolk flares out fo rthe U joint , maybe there is a broken piece inside or the rear bushing is damaged

Ah, you have a point on how it might look.

I will check for any obstruction on the inside.

Well I must have had a bad day when trying to install the drive shaft a while back as it didn't want to go in all the way.

I tried it again today and it slipped right in.  :clueless: I feel like a dumb a$$. I mean good grief  :bricks1:
