Rust hole fix on an S-10
« on: May 09, 2013 - 10:20:27 PM »
My buddy has an s-10 that has a pretty small rust hole (smaller than a quarter) on the bottom rocker panel at the back of the cab.  Its just a daily driver, and he doesn't have time to fool with it, so I told him I would fix it.  Im sure there is probably a little more rust that isn't seen around the hole. Truck is white, and I plan on painting it afterwards. Sorry I can't post pics, I don't have the truck right now. I was thinking of using some fiberglass mat and resin. Any other way of fixing that small rust hole pretty cheap?

Yup :iagree: welding is the cheapest way. Get a little patch panel and weld it in. Do good prep and clean it good.

The real down and dirty way to fix it good enough for inspection or to get by for a short time?My trick is to use Marglass or similar fiberglass reinforced filler-grind about 1-2" around the area, mix up enough to cover the hole and ground area, layout some 2" tape sticky side up using rows overlapping to cover the area plus 3-4", blob the mixed Marglass onto the sticky side of the tape, pickup the tape and smoosh it into the hole roughly smoothing the tape to the contour of the body.Wait till the Marglass harderns, peel off the tape and if you want to get pretty grind/sand it down smooth and prime and paint.Of course you may need a couple more skim coats to fill in any voids.Cheap, quick and easy but obviuosly a total hack job but works in a pinch!
