Challenger Fuel Tank Installation - Bolt Fitment?
« on: April 10, 2013 - 11:42:14 AM »

Pretty straight forward question this, how do the gas tank strap bolts closest to the front of the car install? I've got the J-Bolts (on the rear) in and will remove my valance to get the tank it but even without the tank there, playing around with the bolts, how do they slot in?? I can't feel any thread to bolt them in nor any hole like the j-bolts.

The body shop who installed my 3-link rear removed it so I never saw how they came out and I've never done it before. Searching this site, all I know is it's tight and quite a prick job LOL. Any photos would be much appreciated. Cheers!!

Cuda and Challenger gas tank straps use a "T" in a slot at the front of the tank and your typical "J" bolt at the rear.

The gas tank brace that's welded to the floor will have a slot in which you insert the "T" shaped end of the strap into. You sort of turn it on it's side to get it in, once in it won't pull out. Then you install your tank using the "J" bolts at the other end.
I've taught you everything you know.....but I haven't taught you everything I know !

I agree . . . no bolts on the front part of the straps.  They are slotted and insert into "T" shaped slotts on the underside of the car.

Excellent, thanks everyone and thanks anlauto, for some unknown reason, my straps had 1 bolt her PER end, 4 holes in total. Looking at the straps you posted makes MUCH more sense now. Now I'm just curious as to how my tank was staying in place prior to removal LMAO......it had 2 bolts put in the ends (in a "so I don't lose them fashion") so I assumed that's where they were. They look like the original straps form my car and appear to be my ones. I'm going to have to order new straps.....does the part ordering and cost never end!! :2cents: :-[ :grinno:
