2013 Challenger r/t wheel choices ?
« on: April 10, 2013 - 12:48:52 PM »
I want to get a new 2013 Challenger R/T and while deciding which options to get & not get, the Wheel & tire choices i are something I want to get right. I am old school when it comes to wheels & tires and really don't care for the BIG wheel & rubber band tire look, as I like some rubber on the wheels.  There are wheel sizes from 18 - 20 & maybe even larger however with the larger wheel size comes the smaller tire size. What are the pros & cons of the different size wheels & tires, I mean what is all this HUGE wheel size with tires that are hard to even see ?  I think rubber band looking tires would provide very little protection for the wheels, as tires can take a scrape or two but wheels would be damaged with those same scrapes. I may buy after market wheels later on but still want the car to look good and not leave big empty wheel wells. do those small tires on big wheels provide  better ride quality or do you feel every pebble & crack on the road ? I just want to get the best ride  & handling as possible
Bert

Bert,

 I'm with you man.   :worshippy

I can only imagine the 20" wheels have a harsher ride, but handle better. I have after-market 18" wheels on my car. The tires are 60 series, 225. The so called charts said this was the most meat I could put on them, but I could have bought wider rims in the back at least, and had more rubber.

That looks good ! I don't like harsh rides & see the newer 4 X 4 trucks even having the huge rim & no sidewall tires. I don't know how a set up like that handles off road without destroying the expensive wheels. Is 18 inch the smallest wheel you can get for new challengers ?

18" is the smallest wheel diameter available on the new Challengers, though you might be able to retrofit a 17" depending on brake clearance.

Personally, I find the ride to be quite alright with the 20" rubber as the suspension is excellent.

Assuming that you're looking at an R/T (SRT8s have 20" standard), then the choices are:

18" 5-spoke aluminum

18" 5-spoke aluminum 'chrome clad'

20" Envy wheel - which is being phased out, I'm not sure if it can be specified any longer

20" black pocket wheel - the current standard wheel for R/T Classic

20" Heritage (Cragar-like) wheel.  At present, the cars are still being built with the same style Heritage wheel that's been around since 2009.  However, they will be switching to an updated version of the Heritage shortly....

...ya gotta go with 20 inch wheels, they just fill up the wheel well better, especially with larger/taller tires...don't remember the sizes of my tires, but the rears are huge...20 inch Cragar S/S wheels

ps...take the cheapest factory (if there is one) wheel/tire combo and put the extra $$$ into a set of what you like
